Nizambad: Expressing their anger at BJP MP Arvind Dharmapuri for failing to convince the central government to establish a turmeric council in the district, turmeric growers dumped their stocks outside the MP’s residence here on Sunday.

In March 2019, the BJP MP had pledged to establish a turmeric council in the district after being elected MP. He had even signed on a non-judicial (bond) stamp paper in this regard.

Over the past three years, the MP has managed to secure an allocation of Rs 1.92 crore for almost 1 lakh turmeric farmers in the district, the farmers said while holding the copies of RTI on the funds allocation .

If these funds were distributed among farmers, it would amount to less than Rs 200 per farmer. The BJP MP tricked the farmers with his fake assurance and handed out bond paper, turmeric ryots smoked.

They pointed out that it was K Kavitha after being elected MP for Nizamabad in 2014 who took up the fight for turmeric growers in Delhi.

According to RTI details shared by the former MP on Thursday, for the year 2020-21, Rs 1,18,71,000 was allocated, of which Rs 75 lakhs was Boiler Aid and Rs. helping turmeric polishers.

Similarly, for 2021-2022, a total of Rs 74.81 lakhs was allocated, and Rs 39.73 lakhs went to aid for boilers, Rs 6.58 lakhs for turmeric polishers and Rs 15 lakhs using the Silpaulin leaves, Rs 10 lakhs in aid for spices Producer group in the identified group and Rs 3.50 lakhs for setting up basic quality testing equipment, said RTI’s response.

In the run up to the 2019 elections in Lok Sabha, in addition to promising the farming community to set up a turmeric council, Arvind had also assured that appropriate minimum support prices would be set for turmeric and red jowar.

“Since he failed to deliver on his two pledges, Arvind Dharmapuri should step down as MP as he had promised and join the farmers’ and people’s movement, the farmers demanded.
