Each year, the National Book Foundation honors the best American literature of the year in five categories: non-fiction, fiction, translated literature, poetry and books for young adults.
25 judges (five experts per genre) nominated by past winners, finalists and judges spend the summer reading hundreds of hopeful submissions (around 150 for poetry to over 500 for non-fiction) at the search for remarkable books.
In mid-September, they name their 10 favorites from a long list. In mid-October, they brought it back to their top five. Nobody knows who will be the winner until the very day of its announcement, when the judges come together to choose the best book.
The winners, announced in November, receive $ 10,000 and the finalists receive $ 1,000. Both can expect an increase in prestige and sales of books.
Former National Book Award winners in fiction now include the classics “Sophie’s Choice” by William Styron, “All the Pretty Horses” by Cormac McCarthy and “The Corrections” by Jonathan Franzen, as well as recent rising stars “Sing, Unburied, Sing “by Jesmyn Ward and” Interior Chinatown “by Charles Yu.
