Bookworms will have a chance to grab a bargain as Nottingham City Libraries hold their first major surplus book sale in several years.
As Nottingham City Council Libraries move to the new Central Library site, it is time to remove some old and excess stock to make room for the new items.
Last week the library was open to primary school groups for a preview of the sale and the opportunity to energize school libraries and next week the general public will have the opportunity to purchase any remaining ex-stock.
The library service normally holds book sales each year to remove duplicates and items that are outdated or in poor condition. However, the pandemic has prevented this, which together with the extra stock available due to the move to the new library, means this will be a bumper sale.
Taking place on the ground floor of the library, the six-day event will allow book lovers to purchase items from just 20 pence.
The range of material on offer includes DVDs, CDs, local study books, local study maps and prints, sheet music, magazines, adult and children’s fiction, non-fiction books for adults and children, talking books and books in the languages of the world.
Any remaining items will be sold to specialist booksellers who sell on behalf of the council or sell themselves, or donated to other institutions and charities. The money from the sale is reinvested in the service of the library.
Nottingham City Council portfolio holder for leisure and culture, Cllr Eunice Campbell-Clark, said: “As we approach an exciting new chapter for Nottingham City Libraries, staff have been working tirelessly to empty the central library before moving on to new development. This will allow us to add new stock to existing stock and offer the best selection to library users when opening the new central library.
“Additionally, the library has been unable to hold its annual book sale due to the coronavirus pandemic, so the sale is even bigger than usual, including stock across the entire library system. . We are delighted to be able to offer the people of Nottingham the opportunity to buy books at reduced prices. With thousands of items on sale, there really is something for everyone.
