Manchester United close in on Feyenoord defender Tyrell Malacia as first summer signing – Paper Round

United close in on Malacia

Manchester United are set to make their first signing of the summer, according to The Telegraph. 22-year-old left-back Tyrell Malacia had appeared set to move to Lyon but United agreed to pay 15 million euros. The Dutch international defender has agreed personal terms with the club, who are also continuing to hunt Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

Paper Round’s point of view: Manchester United are in desperate need of a capable new left-back. Alex Telles has been consistent but is not at the level required to retain a place in the first team for the long term. And although Luke Shaw has the talent, he cannot be trusted to keep himself in shape and he has apparently managed to learn little about the sophisticated demands of modern football.

Dembele set to announce the future

Ousmane Dembele has been in talks with Barcelona in recent days as his current contract comes to an end, and Spanish newspaper Marca report that the 25-year-old France international and his manager Xavi Hernandez would prefer him to stay with the club. However, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Chelsea have offered him more money and he will make his decision soon.

Paper Round’s point of view: Dembele’s improvement in Spain coincided – as with many players – with the realization that his current contract was expiring and he could soon make new demands. Although it’s only human nature given there was an obvious catalyst for making more money, all clubs that love the player need to be sure that his rise is sustainable over the next few years.

Chelsea and Arsenal keen on Bremer

Brazilian defender Gleison Bremer, 25, is of interest to both Arsenal and Chelsea as they take stock of their defensive goals for the coming season. The Turin centre-back could be available for £43m and the Premier League pair are taking notes. One option for Arsenal is Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez while another for Chelsea is Sevilla’s Jules Kounde.

Paper Round’s point of view: If Torino are keen to sell then Chelsea and Arsenal could be wary, but pre-season is kicking off and both sides need further improvements if they are to be in contention for the top four in the coming year. Kounde appears to be one of the best defenders around, but the problem for Chelsea is that his current club don’t seem ready to sell on the cheap.

City could sell three to Chelsea

The Daily Mail reports that Chelsea are close to reaching an agreement with fellow Premier League side Manchester City over the signing of Raheem Sterling. The 27-year-old will cost around £45million but could be joined at Stamford Bridge by a few other current colleagues, including utility player Oleksandr Zinchenko and defender Nathan Ake.

Paper Round’s point of view: Ake and Zinchenko rarely let Pep Guardiola down during their spells at Manchester City, but they were often absent from the biggest games of last season, and the same can be said of Sterling. It’s time to move on if they want to play regularly and Chelsea offer hardly any setbacks and a chance to challenge regularly for the top honours.
