Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) founder Jose Maria “Joma” Sison has denied a report claiming he was a consultant to presidential candidate Vice President Leni Robredo.
In a statement, Sison debunked the Journal News Online article quoting Ang Bayan, the CPP’s official publication, allegedly quoting Sison expressing his support for Robredo and admitting that he was acting as an adviser to her and her carrier. floor, Barry Gutierrez.
Journal News Online is owned by the Romualdez, first cousins of Robredo’s main rival, Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
The CPP, through its director of information Marco Valbuena, also denied that Ang Bayan published a news article containing such statements by Sison.
“This is obviously fake news concocted by Marcos in hopes of lending credibility to claims of ‘coalition’ between Robredo’s camp and the PCP in hopes of consolidating anti-communist military and police support for Marcos,” did he declare.
Reacting to the accusation, Robredo said on Saturday that she was considering legal options against anyone who spread the false allegations.
In a statement, Robredo categorically denied that Sison, currently in exile in the Netherlands, was advising her or Gutierrez.
“I never even spoke to him, personally or by any means,” she added.
“Our lawyers are currently studying how we can file a complaint to hold accountable whoever spread this lie,” she said.
This is the first time that Robredo—No. 1 victim of misinformation according to fact-checking coalitions – had threatened to take decisive action against critics who sought to defame her and her campaign by labeling her supporters red.
