Information for electors for the special election of March 15, 2022

A special election will be held March 15, 2022 to fill the remainder of a North Liberty City Council term that expires December 31, 2023. The seat was filled by Chris Hoffman, who was elected mayor effective January 1. 2022.

Three candidates applied for this seat: Ashley Bermel, Samantha Gulick and Robert Strickland. We have posted the candidates’ statements on our website.

Local, state, and federal elections throughout Johnson County, including North Liberty, are the responsibility of the Johnson County Auditor’s Office. North Liberty encourages residents to register and vote as a way to participate in their government. The County Auditor has detailed information about this election online, including a list of candidates who will appear on the ballot and forums.

Candidate statements and forums

Before early voting begins, we will post short video statements from the nominated candidates. Videos of the statements and the forum are available on our City Election page.

Vote early

Early voting is available. Registered voters can vote early in person at the Johnson County Auditor’s Office, 913 S Dubuque Street, Iowa City, (you must vote at your assigned polling station on Election Day) beginning Monday, February 28. Voters can request a mail-in ballot until Feb. 28 at 5 p.m.

Vote on election day

Polling stations will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. On Election Day, voters will vote at the North Liberty Community Center, 520 W. Cherry Street. To vote on Election Day, voters must provide identification.

Register to vote

A voter will need to register each time they move house, change name or change political affiliation. Voters can register to vote as soon as they receive mail at home, as long as they are U.S. citizens, Iowa residents, and at least 17½ years old (must be 18 on the day ballot to vote). Registration is available online, by mail or in person; Learn the requirements and download the forms from the Johnson County Auditor’s website. Registration is available in person on election day at your regular polling place.
