“I still have one election to win”

She may now be the only candidate actively campaigning in Washougal’s mayoral race, but Rochelle Ramos has said she takes nothing for granted.

Ramos’ opponent in the November 2 general election, Derik Ford, suspended his campaign this month after being arrested for domestic violence.

“This race was never about Derik Ford,” Ramos told the Post-Record this week. “It was about the future of Washougal and what is best for our community. Nothing has changed for me – I will always hold more “meeting and greets” and share what I can do, and do, for Washougal. There is one more election to win for me.

Despite his campaign suspension, Ford will still appear in the November 2 poll.

“His name appears on the ballot,” Clark County Auditor Greg Kimsey said. “We sent ballots to foreign and military voters (before he suspended his campaign).”

Ford and Ramos were both scheduled to appear at the Clark County League of Women Voters Candidates Forum on September 22, but Ford was not in attendance.

“Candidate Ford has confirmed his participation in this event, and we have attempted to contact him throughout the past few weeks, as well as today, with no response,” forum moderator Jan Van Dyke said on September 22. . “Due to our inability to reasonably reschedule this event, and its original confirmation of its presence, we will proceed with the single candidate.”

Ramos said she assumed the fact that Ford had not participated in the forum was “confirmation that he was suspending his campaign.”

“Initially he was going to participate,” said Ramos. “The date has even been changed for him. He did not respond to their confirmation (request) after the news of his arrest and did not participate, but I still had the opportunity to answer questions.

During the forum, Ramos spoke about her experience and approach to dealing with some of Washougal’s most pressing issues, stressing that her top three areas of focus if elected would be public safety; the aesthetics and infrastructure of the community; and fiscal responsibility.

Ramos works as a director of human resources at PLEXSYS Interface Products, a Camas-based software company, and co-owner of the non-profit Washougal-based Lunchmoney Indoor Skatepark. She has been a member of the Washougal Parks Commissioners Council since 2018.

“I believe all of this makes me a great candidate for the post of mayor and to serve the citizens of Washougal,” Ramos said. “I think the (current) setup, where the CEO is responsible for staff and budget, and the mayor more responsible for ceremonial activities and running city council meetings and being the face of Washougal, is a perfect balance. and aligns perfectly with my experience working in human resources and presentations, strategic planning, budgeting and policy development.

Ramos is tentatively expected to hold his next “meet and greet” event on Sunday, October 17, at a location to be advertised on his website, voterochelle.com.
